Our Federal Government Client is seeking experienced Java Developers with Angular and Micronaut or Springboot experience to support the maintenance and enhancement of their existing business applications.
 
This role involves working as part of a Scrum team to deliver solutions for business needs and maintain current Java-based applications. The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining large and complex applications, conducting code reviews, and ensuring that application development aligns with the Client's standards and methodologies.

We are looking for creative problem-solvers with strong analytical and technical expertise. The successful candidate will have extensive experience in Java development, with demonstrated experience in maintaining and enhancing large-scale applications.
They will work closely with various stakeholders, including business analysts, testers, and other technical teams, to ensure the successful delivery of projects. In addition to technical skills, the ideal candidate will possess excellent communication and collaboration abilities, enabling them to effectively work with diverse teams and drive project success.

This role offers an exciting opportunity to make a significant impact on the Client's digital transformation journey, contributing to improved efficiency and service delivery. As Java Developers, the role requires a deep understanding of Java and associated frameworks, as well as experience in maintaining and enhancing complex applications.  

Note:
  • This position will be based in Canberra and will be available starting March 2025.
  • On occasion, this role may require working outside standard business hours, including weekends, to undertake system maintenance activities.

Key duties and responsibilities

Deliverables for the Java/Angular/Micronaut Develop include, but not limited to, the following:
  • Develop software applications to meet business requirements and support projects/programs using Java, Angular/React, and Micronaut/Springboot, adhering to the System Development Life Cycle (SDLC) and Agile development practices and processes.
  • Perform code reviews, provide quality assurance, and estimate development efforts for new applications and changes to existing systems.
  • Contribute to system and database design, develop and maintain system documentation, and address architectural issues to ensure alignment with enterprise architecture standards.
  • Participate in scrum meetings and daily stand-ups to continuously improve processes and task assignments.
  • Collaborate closely with business analysts, testers, and stakeholders to ensure efficient and high-quality project delivery, including status reporting and defect management.
  • Facilitate knowledge transfer and upskilling within the team to ensure continuous improvement and capability development.

Essential criteria

1. • Minimum of five years in full-stack design and development with strong skills in Java, Angular, Micronaut, and JavaScript. • Experience with front-end frameworks (React, Angular, etc) and back-end frameworks (Spring, Micronaut etc). • Experience with cloud platforms such as Azure or AWS and CI/CD processes. • Proficiency in Angular frameworks to build and maintain interactive user interfaces. • Designing and implementing Java-based applications as well as being able to reverse engineer existing applications. • Demonstrated ability to develop business solutions through the System Development Life Cycle (SDLC) and Agile development practices and processes to meet the deliverables as a developer. • Analysing user requirements / user stories to inform application design with minimal defects. • Experience in developing front end applications and working collaboratively with business stakeholders in the co-design, co-build, co-deliver phases. • Ability to develop software where users are authenticated and unauthenticated (MyGov for external users and VANguard Federated Authentication Service (FAS) for internal users/single sign on etc).

2. • Intellij and Maven build tools. • Experience using SOAP, XML, EJB 3, JPA and Web Services/RESTful APIs. • Proficient in Java/J2EE/JEE design and development. • Exposure to and familiarity in writing Junit test cases. • Knowledge of relational databases and understanding of SQL. • Skills in designing and writing technical specifications and systems documentation • Effectively manage ambiguity, competing priorities and evolving demands. • Demonstrated interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively and show initiative.


Desirable criteria

1. • Relevant qualifications and/or certification as a Java /Angular/Micronaut Developer. • Experience in UX/UI practices and standards.


The role is on an  initial contract to 30 June 2025 with two (2) possible 12-month contract extension options.   The work is based in  Woden with the option to work at home two (2) days a week (3 days on site). Candidates may also work from the Client's Sydney office in a hybrid arrangement, but must be capable of reporting to the Woden office on an as needed basis.
 
Due to security clearance requirements for this role, candidates must be Australian with active AGSVA Baseline Security Clearance.
