What is a Web Developer?
Web Developers design, create, produce and maintain websites using relevant software packages. They often work along side Graphic Designers to create websites that are visually appealing and serve a purpose to the end user. This might be to convey information, offer services or sell products online.
Web Developers generally fall into one of three categories:
- Back End Developers who focus on the use of Hypertext Pre-processor (PHP), Java, .NET, Ruby on Rails, Node.js
- Front End Developers who use JavaScript, Angular.JS, Hyper Text Mark-up Language (HTML), Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), JQuery
- CMS Developers who use programs such as Magento, Drupal, Umbraco and WordPress

Employment opportunities
Web Developers can work in IT specific industries and other industries requiring IT expertise. Developers can be employed on a permanent basis within a company, however, it’s also common to be self-employed and work as a freelance Web Developer consultant.
